AWKER SIDDELEY'S MIGHTY HUNTER - The Nimrod is unique among land-based maritime reconnaissance aeroplanes currently in service by being turbojet-powered. In this account, accompanied by a new cutaway drawing and colour photographs, the Nimrod's evolu- tion, characteristics and future potential are fully described. THE TENTH DIMENSION - Development of the tenth Douglas Commercial transport was undertaken against a background of serious financial difficulties within the company a€ a situation that seems to be endemic among civil aircraft manufacturers. How the company overcame its problems and gave birth to the DC-10 is fully related here. THE DEVIL'S BROOMSTICK - Work on a rocket-powered interceptor was undertaken in the Soviet Union during World War II as a follow-on to a general investigation of rocket propulsion using modified sailplanes. Although the programme was beset by difficulties, as related in this account, flight testing of the B1 prototypes continued until March 1945 and brought the posthumous award of Hero of the Soviet Union to the pilot who made the first rocket tests and was subsequently killed in a B1.
