THE FIGHT FOR THE SKIES - Two years ago, AIR enthusiast presented, under this title, a review of the air superiority fighters and interceptors then in production or under development. The intervening period has seen many changes, with some new types being promoted or built and others adopted for full-scale production. In this issue, Roy M Braybrook, BSc, CEng, AFRAeS, gives a personal view of the fighter scene today.
AUSTRALIAN WANDERER - THE GAP NOMAD - Now in production for military and commercial customers, the Nomad represents the first major Australian effort to capture a share of the international aircraft market. This account of the No- mad's development is accompanied by a new cutaway drawing detailing the forthcoming production standard.
THE UNTOSSED PANCAKE = Perhaps the most unusual fighter design ever to reach the prototype stage was the Chance Vought XF5U-1 -almost a "flying saucer". Although the configuration was thoroughly tested with a full-scale flying model, the V-173. the prototype was abandoned shortly before its planned first flight, and the potential of the XF5U-1, fully described in this account, was destined to remain an enigma.
BEST OF THE BREED - MESSERSCHMITT'S GUSTAV - The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was, in the opinion of some, the Luftwaffe's best fighter of. World War II and the Gustav variant was,'in the opinion of Capt Eric Brown, the best of the 109s. The characteristics of the Bf 109G are described by Capt Brown in "Viewed from the Cockpit".
