FAN-IN-A-RING ... SUCCESSOR TO THE PROPELLER? - The ducted or shrouded propeller, rotor or fan is by no means a novelty, a variety of prototypes having been tested with varying forms of this propulsion method both before and since World War II. Current work by Dowty Rotol and RFB, however, as described in this article, holds considerable promise for general aviation aircraft in the next decade.
