FRONT COVER - With the overhead catenary providing a portent of things to come, 8F 2-8-0 No.48453 restarts a down freight from a signal check on Queensville curve, Stafford, on 6th October 1962. The LMS 8F became a standard war production design in 1940 and examples were constructed by the other three main line companies and by outside industry. No.48453 was built by the GWR at Swindon in 1945; it was on loan to the GWR from new and was handed over to the LMS in 1946. A selection of other eight-coupled freight engines appears elsewhere in this magazine.
