A former Great Central 4-6-0 heads an eastbound express en route between Manchester and Sheffield during LNER days in the 1930s. The opening of a new tunnel and the elimination of steam in 1954 was heartily welcomed by railwaymen and a colour feature on the Woodhead electrics appears on page 484 of this issue.
