To mark the centenary of the Unknown Warrior’s final resting place in Westminster Abbey, we asked Justin Saddington, the National Army Museums curator of the exhibition Buried Among Kings, about why this symbolic memorial still resonates today.
Have you noticed how many war heroes have nicknames such as ‘Bunny’ ‘Winkle’ and ‘Sunshine’? Admiral Sir William Milbourne James, who masterminded the little-known Operation Aerial, was known from childhood as ‘Bubbles’. Find out why in ‘Reputations’ on page 34.
Our cover feature focuses on the 70th anniversary of the Korean War. We speak to Ken Keld, who runs the northern branch of the British Korean Veterans Association. The article also includes an account of the Battle of Imjin, the bloodiest conflict taken on by the British Army since World War Two. The work of the Special Operations Executive (SOE), set up by Winston Churchill, is receiving much overdue attention these days. We explore the work of Allied spy Virginia Hall, a one-legged agent who was hunted, but never caught, by the Gestapo. There is also a moving tribute to perhaps the unlikeliest spy of all: Noor Inayat Khan, a Muslim pacifist. A recently released film, A Call To Spy, features both Khan and Hall.
War poet Siegfried Sassoon figures in ‘Lions Led By Donkeys’, which reappraises the notion that all generals were incompetent asses. His cousin, Sir Philip Sassoon, was MP for Hythe from 1912 and Parliamentary Private Secretary to David Lloyd George in 1920. Sassoon is mentioned in our feature ‘The Glamour Boys’, which reveals the bravery of gay MPs who risked scandal and disgrace for speaking out against fascism.
We also have five copies of recently published The Glamour Boys by MP Chris Bryant to give away. For details, please visit www.keymilitary.com/britain-war/competitions
