THE CHANGEOVER YEARS: DECEMBER 1965 FINALE FOR LAST A1 - The Peppercorn A1s were an everyday sight on the North Eastern Region, but almost overnight, with the rapid onset of diesel power, there were massive withdrawals of these splendid modern locomotives that were just 15 years old. Photographer Maurice Burns not only saw the last A1 to receive a general overhaul in Darlington North Road Works and captured on film some of the last of the class in service, but he also travelled on the memorable special train hauled by the last of them, No 60145 Saint Mungo, on New Yeara€ s Eve 1965. This BR special marked the end of express steam haulage on the East Coast Main Line but it also allowed the A1 Pacifics to go out in a blaze of glory - exactly 40 years ago.
