THINGS THAT WENT CLANK IN THE NIGHT
Freight trains - we always knew they were there, we would hear them rumbling and clanking by in the middle of the night. The engines which pulled them didna€ t, by and large, have names or 6ft 8in driving wheels, but huge numbers of them were built. In fact they were the most common of all locomotive types - the 0-6-0, and latterly, as trains became heavier, 0-8-0, 2-8-0 and 2-10-0 goods engines. Dave Wilson recounts the history of the humble goods engine and how they still find useful employment today.
