From the Footplate:
As I round up the January issue, which will be published just before the Christmas period, it gives a funny sensation to think why we have to produce a magazine dated January. 1984 in 19831 The answer is that production schedules, printers' commitments, etc., all play their part; but it always seems strange that the new year’s first magazine must appear before the end of the old year. It also makes me feel much older in advance of everyone else. I think I knowhow H.G. Wells, and his time machine, felt at the prospect. Still, planning ahead for future issues is all part of this time ’bending’... but it does take its loll of editors.
The new year will see a new editor for Model Railways, and as this issue appears on the news stands a decision will have been made as to who the next 'walking target’ will be. Readers have always supported this magazine, as I have found from my brief stint in the chair so far Keep your letters coming, your suggestions are noted and even if you do not get an immediate, detailed reply any relevant suggestions and good ideas are acted upon Afterall, it is the readership that can make or break any journal, and all comments must be taken seriously
A number of readers have remarked upon the article Peter Paget wrote about N gauge potential. All want to see more about this gauge in the magazine and everything it entails. It seems as if Peter's remarks hit the right notes, so we have some features planned for 1984 in answer to your response. In fact, the whole magazine content will be under review and we will endeavour to supply a magazine tailored to readers' needs and trends in the hobby
Many of you have written in and asked what happened to the letters page, Mail Train’. Il seems a lot of readers missed the arguments, hints, advice and just about everything that went with it Well, after a long search through a big postbag we’re back in synch' and the feature will continue as before. It appears that the majority of letters sent to us were ’the best of luck’ types and not for publication; or there was an armistice of some kind, in which you all refrained from shooting the contributors to doll ragsl Now, the cease fire is over and the entertainment value of Mail Train’ has become dear to one and all again. It is, however, quite a source of information when several issues are considered together. Pat-on-the back' letters are all very good, they do wonders for the ego, but I just can't think of what we would have been called, had we filled the page up with them! I thought it best to temporarily suspend the column for a month until we had sufficient for you all to get your teeth into
Finally, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.
KEN JONES
