A RECENT article in the Sunday Observer about disrupting the South African cricket tour states "..letting off stink bombs and operating remote-controlled toy aeroplanes. The advantage of these methods is that none of them involves the use of what could be described as offensive weapons." This is just the sort of inaccurate and irresponsible statement one might expect from the idiots who promote such infantile exhibitionism. Do they not realise that to fly a remote-control "toy" aeroplane, even in a manner sufficient to disrupt a cricket match, requires a skill far beyond their reach Also, do they not appreciate that, in the wrong hands and flown under such conditions, it 'is not only an offensive weapon, but a lethal one We cannot believe that any aeromodeller, with the skill to perform such a task, would so demean the hobby, and one hopes 'that the nits who propose such an operation will first acquaint themselves of the dangers. If they do not, they may achieve publicity beyond their wildest dreams. We wonder if the fact that it will be in a Coroners' Court will cause them any remorse Great Britain 'is, more or less, still a free country. Every man is entitled to his own opinions, and equally entitled to express them to all who will listen. He is not, in our view, free to forcibly prevent others from following their own dictates. For the record, we are against apartheid, we think cricket is the triumph of senility over sensibility and, while on the subject, the spectacle of 22 grown, men chasing an inflated piece of leather about a grass square, to the accompaniment of the vociferous adulation of mindless non-participants, seems the height of moribundity. However, it is not for us to prevent our fellow men from following such relatively harmless pastimes. Neither would we normally concern ourselves with the pathetic (no, dangerous is the right word, for this is how Hitler started) spectacle of well meaning mediocrities trying to force their own prejudices on the uncaring 'majority. However, when they attempt to drag aeromodelling into their escapades, then it becomes serious. Fortunately, ours is a hobby which requires brains, skin, application, craftsmanship, intelligence, ability and responsibility. With such exacting requirements from its followers, is it any wonder it does not attract widespread participation And, considerable comfort, is there, therefore, any real danger of its being used by the people we have described We think not!
