Features:
CBTC comes to Melbourne - The operation of Melbourne's metropolitan railway is undergoing a major transformation, as the network introduces communications-based train control (CBTS) as part of the $11 billion Metro Tunnel Project. The complexity of the project lies in the introduction of CBTC to not only the new 9km twin-tunnels that will run underneath the city's CBD, but also to existing sections of the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines.
N Set refurbishment - The Victorian Government has invested $126 million to improve freight and passenger rail services for the state's regions. Out of this amount, $36 million will go towards maintaining the V/Line Classic Fleet, mainly targeting the N set carriages and Z set carriages, with the work to be undertaken by Bombardier, in both Ballarat and Melbourne, as Ken Carter reports.

Cover: As noted in the report on page 6 of this issue, the NSW government has long had a policy to increase rail's modal share of freight to and from Port Botany. Unfortunately, that share has currently stagnated at 17.6 per cent despite the official government target of 28 per cent by 2021. On Saturday 7 November, SSR 8146 Kelso to Port Botany intermodal freight hauled by B61 Bernie Baker, 44206 and C507, is seen on the Botany line at Pagewood, not far from its destination. Scott Mitchell Opposite: Having departed Bendigo at 7.51am on Monday 2 November, a six-car Vlocity set, led by 1165, passes under the signal gantry on approach to Clarkfield Station. If the timetable is maintained all the way to Melbourne, this train will arrive at Southern Cross Station at 9.44.
Back cover (upper): Watco's NRE/EMD units WRA004 and WRA005 lead 6H38 empty grain train across the Cambooya trestle bridge (south of Toowoomba), on its way to Goondiwindi to load on Wednesday 4 November.
Back cover (lower): The Alstom Citadis 305 Trams that operate Sydney's CBD and South East Light Rail system are the subject of this month's rolling stock profile (see page 46). On Thursday morning 5 December 2019, cars 16 and 15 cross Pitt Street as they travel along Eddy Avenue on their way to Circular Quay.
