COVER PICTURES:
Churchward's 'small Prairie' became the mainstay of West Country branches and local lines from its introduction in 1906 until replacement by diesel multiple units — or until the branch closed. But the sight of a 4500 class 2-6-2T in action can still be enjoyed on two West Country railways — the Torbay Steam Railway and the West Somerset Railway. The Severn Valley's No4566, however, looks set to spend this summer on the unfamiliar territory of the Kent & East Sussex Railway. On home ground in April 1989, the 2-6-2T descends into Arley.
On this month's back cover, a scene that could be Crewe or Carlisle 1960, as a 'Jinty' shunts wagons and a "Coronation" class Pacific awaits the 'right-away'. Only No46229's NRM headboard mars the illusion. This was Keighley, October 1990, and Duchess of Hamilton was calling in for water while on "CME" duty. The Duchess's year is the subject of a feature next month (Philip Winstantey).
