Cover: Every January in Steam Days we try to provide a 'seasonal' feature, and this month, to add interest to a photo-feature depicting snow scenes, we include some footplatemen's experiences in the snow. One of our fireman, Mike Bentley, operated in the Peak District of Derbyshire a€" renowned for its hard winters a€" and here we see '8F 2-8-0 No 48442 with a Gowhole Sidings to Buxton train hammering through Chapel-en-le-Frith Central on 3 February 1968 when the snow lay thick on the ground. This single-line working was due to essential repairs in Dove Holes Tunnel.
