NER SOUVENIR SECTION:

Introduction to the LNER - The London & North Eastern Railway was the second largest of the 'Big Four' companies and packed an enormous amount into its quarter-century existence. This souvenir issue sets out to sort the wheat from the chaff and this first chapter presents the main 'need-to-know' facts in the form of an overview.
The Constituents - All the parts make the whole . . . the LNER was created by the amalgamation of six principal independent constituent companies and a number of smaller subsidiary railways. This chapter presents a potted history of the six main ones, a resume of three others and then lists the remainder.
Colossus of Steam: Gresley - No history of the LNER can be complete without a major analysis of the career of Sir Nigel Gresley, the chief mechanical engineer for all but seven of the company's 25-year existence. He designed some of the most famous locomotives in the world, including Flying Scotsman and Mallard. In this chapter. Keith Farr discusses the iconic A3 and A4 classes, less well-known but equally impressive types such as the P2 and W1, and the famous pre-war 'Silver Streamliner' trains.
Thompson & the War Years - Debate still rages as to whether Gresley's successor, Edward Thompson, rebuilt many of his former chief's best-loved locomotives for personal or practical reasons. Thompson's career is charted by David Percival.
The Peppercorn Years - The LNER's last CME, Arthur Peppercorn, did much to return the company to Gresley principles, although he had little time in which to do so before Nationalisation.
All that Jazz! - In a special Practice & Performance article, Keith Farr recalls the Liverpool Street commuter services that became the most intensive steam-worked commuter service in the world and became known as 'Jazz' trains.
The BR Steam Era - At Nationalisation, the LNER's assets were divided between three regions of British Railways and the inherited steam locos lasted until the major purges of the early 1960s.
Dawn of the Diesels - This chapter presents an overview of the various types of diesel loco phased in during the steam-to-diesel transition period - and tells of a little-known LNER dieselisation plan!
The North Yorkshire Moors - Several preserved lines are doing a magnificent job keeping the spirit of the LNER alive. Cliff Thomas visits one of the largest, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
LNER to GNER - Chris Milner brings our story up to date with a look at ECML electrification, the Privatisation era and Great North Eastern Railway.
The LNER Family Tree - A genealogical chart placing the ancestry of the LNER into context.
The LNER Specialists - A look at the learned bodies devoted to the study of all matters LNER in the 21st century.
