Introduction to the LMS - The LMS was the largest of the 'Big Four' companies at the 1923 Grouping, but its greatest successes came only after a power struggle between the warring factions of Derby and Crewe. Keith Farr sets the scene.
The Constituents - An amalgamation of several independent companies created the LMS. We present here a brief resume of each of the principal constituents extant in 1921-22.

Colossus of Steam - After the internal strife, the company was desperate for innovation and leadership to compete with its rivals. In William Stanier, its prayers were answered. Keith Farr traces the LMS's tremendous achievements of the 1932-1944 period.
Building on Success - The post-Stanier period had remarkable parallels with the aftermath of Gresley on the LNER. This chapter traces the pre- Nationalisation events of 1945-1947.
Practice & Performance - In a Practice & Performance special, John Heaton examines a batch of previously unseen WCML logs from the late-1940s.
The BR Steam Era - At first, Nationalisation had very little visible effect on the LMS system and until the advent of diesels. it was to some extent a case of 'carry on as you were'. Nick Pigott explains.
Diesel & Electric Dawn - The 1955 Modernisation Plan brought many changes to the ex-LMS network, including faster journey times and the first use of25kV a.c. electrics in the country. Chris Milner reports.
