TRAINS ILLUSTRATED, as a title, was revived in the late 1960s to cover the current railway preservation scene, at a time when preserved locomotives such as Flying Scotsman and Clun Castle were making main line runs. More recently, a Trains Illustrated series featured pre-grouping railways contrasting the scene of the past with the railways of the early/mid 1970s. Then, in 1978/9, came the Express Trains format — eight issues in all. With Trains Illustrated 33 we turn to Railway Preservation as our sub-title and in this series will attempt to do several things — provide a detailed look at some of our leading private railways (starting with the Isle of Man), look at the story behind the preservation and restoration of motive power and rolling stock and, lastly, combine the resources of two of the best-known railway photographers, David Eatwell and John Titlow, to give a tip-top pictorial review of what's news in preservation and what's worth a second look — whether it happened five weeks, five months or five years ago. Our aim is to make Trains Illustrated the quality railway preservation magazine and one acknowledged for accurate reporting on the railway scene by taking the trouble to get behind the facts. We hope you will like it.
