THE IDEA in this issue of Trains Illustrated is to hammer home the point that nothing is impossible in (British) railway preservation. This might sound a bit chauvinistic, but the British railway preservation movement really is a marvellous and unique institution!

So we find a group of professional amateurs maintaining a main line express locomotive, and in 1963 that was trail-blazing. Then someone had the inspiration to acquire a complete steam locomotive depot in 1969. There is the Barry saga, too, but have you ever thought how the money is raised, not what it is spent on? If a railway is worth preserving, why shouldn't "it serve the community, and throughout the year, too? It may be relatively easy to recreate a railway with the strong identity of a previous owner, but what happens when that's not possible? Answers to all such puzzles may be found in these pages.

Finally, we welcome Peter Skelton to Our preservation photographic feature.
