IN THIS issue of Trains Illustrated there are two themes: an insight into the perseverance of railway restorers, more particularly those heroes who have purchased locomotives from Barry for preservation and, secondly, a deliberate attempt to feature the locomotives and railways of Southern England. It is perhaps worth pointing out just how much there is to see in the way of steam in the South.
Boilers have become a topic central to steam railway preservation in recent years and the work involved in keeping locomotive boilers serviceable is covered by Richard Brown in his article in this issue. Continuing our Steam Photographer series, this issue the spotlight turns on John Cooper-Smith and we are delighted to welcome him with his own special feature.
