Listing items for sale

This section explains how Sellers go about actually listing their magazines for sale on the website, where customers can find and purchase them:-

STEP 1 - Log into Seller Account

A free Seller Account is required in order to sell items on the Magazine Exchange website. Users may open an account here

STEP 2 - Locate item in database

Introduction

The Magazine Exchange website is built around a huge database containing details of over 100,000 magazine issues, each of which has a permanent page on the site which potential customers can visit to see details of that issue - and also buy a copy of it, if a Seller happens to be offering one for sale.

The phrase 'listing an item for sale' refers to the action a Seller takes when they add details of their own copy of a particular magazine issue to the website, whereupon those details appear on that magazine issue's existing website page - and customers can then purchase that copy from the Seller.

Unlike when selling on Ebay for instance, the Seller does not have to upload details of the actual magazine issue itself (ie, title / images / description etc) in order to offer it for sale, only brief details of the particular copy they possess.

This does mean though that Sellers can only sell magazine issues which already have a page on the website - but this isn't a problem as there are also mechanisms by which Sellers may add new magazine issues to the site, and indeed add more information to the website pages of issues which are already shown.

Selling Items - Step 1:- Locate Items

Once logged-in in your Seller Account, go to Items for Sale > Print Magazines on the menu; this will open the 'Search for Issues' page shown here, which is the first step in listing an item for sale

Enter appropriate keywords in the search box to locate the magazine or magazines you are looking for. You'll very quickly get the hang of how to most effectively use the search facility, but if you are struggling to find an issue which you think should be in the database, a sure way to check is to go back to the main website and confirm whether the issue is actually shown there - if it doesn't appear on the website it isn't in the database!

STEP 3 - Specify the selling price and condition, and give a brief comment about the item

Once you've located the issue(s) you're looking for in the database, the 'listing' fields for those issues will appear as shown below. You can see that these fields correspond directly to the Seller's listing that actually appears on the website page - adding your listing to the website is simply a matter of entering the relevant information and clicking the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom of the page

Item title - clicking the blue links will open the website page for that issue

Condition - use the drop-down to select the description which most accurately describes the copy you have for sale:-

The condition descriptions offered ('Good', 'Fair', etc) are deliberately intended to be fairly vague and subjective - but you should still be conservative with your claims to reduce the chances of a dissatisfied customer. If you can't decide between 'Good' or 'Fair', choose 'Fair'.

All items must be complete - with occasional exceptions allowed for missing supplements and other loose inserts - but even these absences should be mentioned in the 'Comments' box. Magazines with missing pages should never be offered for sale, and customers receiving such magazines will be automatically entitled to a refund from the Seller

Items in 'Poor' condition (which would include magazines with very tatty or loose covers, stain marks, tears etc) generally should not be regarded as saleable and should instead be thrown away! The only time when a magazine in poor condition should be offered for sale would be if it was considered to be particularly rare or unusual.

Only Trade Sellers may sell items as 'New'. There are no exceptions to this.

Comments - Enter up to 32 characters of text that will help the customer decide whether to buy the item. The comment may be about the specific item being sold, or may be a general comment about yourself as a Seller - eg 'Same day dispatch on all items!'

Quantity - Enter the number of copies of this item you have for sale with the same price and condition. See further information below

Price - Sellers may set prices at any level they wish:-

If you aren't sure how to price an item have a look at similar listings already on the website.

Remember that shipping cost of all items include a £0.40 'quantity charge' - so the price paid by the customer for an item is effectively £0.40 higher than the price set by the Seller of that item. But private Sellers receive £0.20 of this, so even if they set the price of an item at just £0.01 they actually receive £0.21 for the item, plus the postage cost. Selling multiple copies of an item

It may sometimes happen that a Seller has more than one copy of a particular magazine issue for sale. There are two possible scenarios:-

Multiple copies but same condition & price

If all the copies the Seller has fall into the same condition category (ie., 'Good', 'Fair' etc), and the Seller wants to sell them at the same price, then they should simply enter the appropriate number into the 'Quantity' field as described above

Multiple copies with different conditions and/or prices

When one listing for an item is created and saved the page automatically provides a new empty line for that same magazine issue which allows a second listing for that same item to be created with different details.

...And when a second listing is saved the page then provides another empty line so a third listing can be created if required. In this way multiple different listings for the same item can be created, any of which can subsequently be deleted again using the DELETE checkbox.
