This account of the No- mad's development is accompanied by a new cutaway drawing detailing the forthcoming production standard.
THE UNTOSSED PANCAKE = Perhaps the most unusual fighter design ever to reach the prototype stage was the Chance Vought XF5U-1 -almost a "flying saucer". Although the configuration was thoroughly tested with a full-scale flying model, the V-173. the prototype was abandoned shortly before its planned first flight, and the potential of the XF5U-1, fully described in this account, was destined to remain an enigma.
