CONCORDE . . . CLEARED FOR SERVICE - French and British air-worthiness certificates were awarded to the BAC/Aerospatiale Concorde supersonic transport in the final quarter of 1 975, clearing the way for services to start in January. In a major feature in this issue, we describe the flight test programme that has made this milestone possible, totalling 5,500 hrs on eight aircraft.
DEVELOPMENT OF JAPANESE ARMY AVIATION - Japans small Ground Self-Defence Force has maintained a modest air component since 1952, when a flying school was inaugurated with L-5 and L-16 lightplanes. The subsequent growth of the GSDF's air arm is traced in this account by our Japanese correspondent Eiichiro Sekigawa.
THE AIRTRAINER STORY - Now in service with, or production for, the air forces of Australia, New Zealand and Thailand, the Aerospace Airtrainer CT-4A has an unusual history, being a derivative of the winning design in a 1952 light aircraft design competition. The current status of the Airtrainer programme is described here.
TANK'S "SECOND IRON" - Widely regarded as the best fighter deployed by the Luftwaffe during World War II, the Fw 190 was designed largely on Kurt Tank's personal initiative at a time when official favour was bestowed almost exclusively upon the Bf 109 In the "Viewed from the Cockpit" series, Capt Eric Brown describes the merits of the Fw 190.
