FRONT COVER: Ex-GWR 'County' 4-6-0 No. 1000 County of Middlesex at Old Oak Common depot on 5th May 1956. The first example of the last GWR express passenger design, the locomotive carries its original double chimney as fitted when built in 1945; it received the 'standard' type of double chimney (as eventually fitted to all the 'Counties') in 1958.
