FRONT COVER: A famous name on our front cover this month - none other than the world speed record holder, A4 4-6-2 No.60022 Mallard No.60022 was photographed at Newcastle Central on 15th April 1963 on an Easter Monday Newcastle-King's Cross relief train. This was almost the end of Mallard's working career for it was withdrawn from service only ten days later. Alongside can be glimpsed a 'Deltic' diesel-electric of a class which had by then taken over most of the principal East Coast route expresses. (T. J. Edgington)
