FEATURES THE BOMBS OF RETRIBUTION During the evening of 14 July 1944, a force of de Havilland Mosquitoes of the RAF's 140 Wing took off for their next operation over Northern France. However, it was not, as Ken Wright reveals, a typical mission for the Mosquito crews as they had taken off to avenge the deaths of a number of SAS personnel. KNOWING WHEN TO STOP Aerial combat is often a highly personal affair, the term "duel" frequently being ascribed to the intense dogfights which saw individuals pitted together in their deadly encounters. Yet when the enemy had been driven to the ground the fighting usually ended - but sometimes emotions ran a little too high. Simon Muggleton relates an incident in the Battle of Britain which demonstrates just how personal the fighting could become. THE MEDIC AND THE MARINE One hundred miles to the north of Basra on a low ridge that overlooks the Tigris River lies the city of Al Amarah - the administrative capital of southern Iraq's oil-rich Maysan province. From the start of Operation Telic in March 2003, writes Dave Cassan, it was the scene of the fiercest, most intense fighting that British forces encountered during the entire Iraqi campaign. COURAGE REDOUBLED The Military Cross was a bravery award constituted shortly after the First World War began, generally for junior officers, and names of the first recipients appeared in the London Gazette in January 1915. Over 1,000 airmen, flying with the Royal Flying Corps, won the MC, and a number of them received a single Bar - but only a handful was awarded a second Bar. Norman Franks tells their stories. REGULARS RECONNAISSANCE REPORT A look at some of the new publications and products that are available. WHAT I WOULD SAVE IN A FIRE Damien Horn, Owner of The Channel Islands Military Museum at St Ouen's Bay, Jersey, reveals the items under his care that he would save in the event of a fire: a pair of German Enigma machines.
