FEATURES THE NATION'S PRIDE The Victoria Cross is the most prestigious gallantry award in the world and each medal awarded represents an act of the most remarkable courage in the face of the enemy. As the world's largest gathering of Victoria Crosses goes on public display for the first time at the ImperialWarMuseum in London, Tony Gledhill, himself a holder of the George Cross, spoke with Lord Ashcroft - the man behind this remarkable collection. THE FLYING PORCUPINE The Short Sunderland was a remarkable flying boat as well as being, to the Germans, a fearsome adversary. Its ability to fight off attackers was legendary, gaining it the nickname "The Flying Porcupine". But, as Chris Goss reveals, it did not always succeed in fighting off the enemy. A SUCCESSFUL FAILURE The Hawker Typhoon was built as the next generation of interceptor-fighter but when the RAF began to fly the new plane they found that it suffered from serious technical defects. Real doubts about the Typhoon's future were raised until its role was changed to that of fighter-bomber and then, as Norman Franks describes, it proved to be one of the best Allied ground-attack aircraft of the Second World War. GOING TOO FAR It was July 1916, the height of the Battle of the Somme. Elements of the British 48th (South Midland) Division had been ordered to capture a knot of trenches in the German front line at Ovillers. It fell to Lieutenant Charles Carrington MM of 'C' Company, the 1/5th Royal Warwickshire Regiment, to lead the assault. SAVING ST PAUL'S London's most iconic buildings must have seemed obvious targets for the Germans when the decision was made to switch from attacking airfields and military installations to concentrate on bombing Britain's capital. Despite the devastation that surrounded it, incredibly St Paul's Cathedral endured the Blitz relatively unscathed. John Grehan investigates two of the people who helped ensure this happened and in so doing became the first two servicemen to be awarded the George Cross.
