FEATURES THE LANCASTER AND THE MERLIN: TWO ICONS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR One of the great icons of the Second World War was the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Considered by many to be one of the finest piston engines ever conceived, it is perhaps the only engine to have become as famous as the aircraft it powered. But, as Tony Pay investigates, how many people actually know who made most of the engines used to power Britain's most important wartime bomber? BEHIND THE OFFENSIVE The Allied bombing campaign against Germany in the Second World War was the greatest continuous air operation ever mounted. This vast undertaking was only made possible because of an enormous logistical effort by the British railways. John Grehan takes a look at this remarkable endeavour GERMANY'S GIBRALTAR: SIEGE AT TSINGTAO The men of the 2nd Battalion The South Wales Borderers saw service from the very start of the First World War. But, incredibly, they were not to qualify for the 1914 Star. The reason for this was that their service was not in the European Theatre of operations - they fought in China. Dr. John Dixon uncovers the story of this British involvement in China. THE SUB KILLER HMS Venturer became the first submarine to sink another sub whilst both were under the water. But this was not the only time that this remarkable boat had sunk another submarine. Robert Mitchell tells the story of 'The Sub Killer'. REGULARS DATAFILE This month Mark Khan takes a look the Sten Gun. A design derived from a time when Britain stood alone against Nazi Germany, inspired by the idea for a cheap mass produced machine carbine, manufactured by the million, the Sten Gun not only served the British and Commonwealth armies, but provided a fearsome weapon in the hands of resistance fighters in German Occupied Europe. SURVIVORS: THE BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION TSR.2 There can be few British aircraft design programmes that have been as dogged by controversy and speculation as the ill-fated Cold War British Aircraft Corporation TSR.2 project. Despite such strengths and attributes, the work on the TSR.2 was hastily terminated. We examine the two surviving examples of this cold-war project.
