5 PAGE SPECIAL SUPPLEMENT TOP TWENTY BATTLEFIELD SITES OF THE WESTERN FRONT In a special supplement that continues a€~Britain at Wara€ magazine marking the commemorations surrounding the centenary of the First World War, we highlight battlefield visiting and also pick out a a€~top twentya€ of iconic and historic battlefield sites on the Western Front. FEATURES BREACHING THE LAST BARRIER On 24 March 1945, as the war in Europe was drawing to its conclusion, the Allies mounted the biggest airborne assault in military history with a€~Operation Varsitya€ as they sought to take some of the remaining bridges over the Rhine. DEATH OR GLORY GRENADIER Sgt John Rhodes became the most highly decorated British Grenadier ever, winning the DCM and VC during heroic actions in the First World War. His exploits in patrol leading, and later pill-box busting, became legendary. Without a doubt, Rhodes was an extraordinary soldier but sadly he never lived to see the confirmation of his supreme award for gallantry. ATTACK OF THE EAGLES On 13 August 1940 the Luftwaffe launched its a€~Adlertaga€ (Eagle Day) assault across a wide front, attacking the RAF in the air and on the ground. The operation, overall, did not go entirely to plan and in this feature one specific air action involving a group of Messerschmitt 110s that were engaged by RAF fighters high above the Dorset coast is examined. EXERCISE ADLERTAG Following on from a€~Attack of The Eaglesa€ this feature charts the archaeological investigation of one of the crash sites of the Messerschmitt 110s downed over Dorset on 13 August 1940. The project was undertaken as part of the MOD-sponsored a€~Operation Nightingalea€ project which uses archaeology to help rehabilitate injured British service personnel. HMS ROCKINGHAM a€ FRIENDLY FIRE EPISODE HMS Rockingham sailed from Rosyth on 25 September 1944 to patrol off the Scottish coast as safety ship during live firing exercises. In the event it was her crew who would need to be rescued after an unfortunate a€~friendly firea€ episode. BATTLE OF CAMP BASTION To mark the cessation of British combat operations in Afghanistan during October 2014 we look at the story of the Talibana€ s assault on Camp Bastion when fifteen insurgents managed to get inside the perimeter of the main ISAF operating base during 2012, causing very significant damage during what was a boldly audacious attack. BARRAGE BALLOONS The story of barrage balloons in the overall picture of the air war over Britain is often overlooked but in this feature the part played by these silver monsters of the sky is examined in detail. Surprisingly, the hazard they presented to allied aircraft was significant and far more a€~friendlya€ aircraft were either destroyed or damaged by the balloons. OPERATION a€~THESISa€ a€" CRETE 1943 After the German occupation of Crete the Allies had been relatively impotent in terms of making any meaningful assault on this important island. However, during 1943 the RAF came up with a plan to carry out a mass attack using about one hundred Hurricanes and a number of medium bombers.
