FEATURES ENCOUNTER OVER LONDON Renowned aviation historian Dr Alfred Price tells the story of two airmen who first met on opposing sides on 15 September 1940, Battle of Britain Day. During the ensuing clash, both men came close losing their lives. Yet, as is often the case in such matters, nearly five decades later they were able to meet as friends. AMBUSH AT AL WAKI As the fight against the insurgency in Iraq and Afghanistan intensified since 2001, British and Coalition forces had to rapidly adapt to a new form of guerilla warfare, probably none more so than the 2,700 personnel that made up the RAF Regiment. The Type IXC U-boat U-533 was one of five sent to the Arabian Sea in the middle of 1943. For 104 days she roamed the warm waters of the region until a chance encounter with an RAF aircraft brought her third war patrol to a violent end. Martin Mace examines both her fate and the efforts to find her. However, as Chris Goss reveals, the events surrounding the activity of Bomber Command aircraft and Luftwaffe night fighters in the war-torn skies over eastern France on of the night of 14-15 April 1943, illustrated just how difficult it was for pilots to always make a correct assessment.
