FEATURES THE WAY TO HEAVEN On the morning of 27 September 1940, eleven pilots of 303 (Polish) Squadron were scrambled from their base at Northolt to intercept a German raid heading for London. Climbing through the low grey cloud and haze, the Hurricanes suddenly burst out into the clear morning sunlight - a scene recreated by the aviation artist Mark Postlethwaite. Just twenty minutes later they were "bounced" by a number of Messerschmitt Bf 109s and were fighting for their lives. We retrace the story of that autumn day and the careers and fate of those eleven young men.
