THE HEAVY METAL SHOW: A RESOUNDING SUCCESS! - The Great Central Railway's autumn steam gala, which was dubbed the a€~Heavy Metal Showa€ in its BR black-dominated attempt to re-create the last months of steam on the main line in north-west England before it all ended in 1968, is being hailed as a standout success, writes Robin Jones.
SEVERN VALLEY AUTUMN GALA PHOTO COMPETITION - The photographic competition promoted by Heritage Railway in connection with the Severn Valley Railwaya€ s autumn gala certainly caught the readers' imagination, with a huge response, with pictures taken at all hours of the day and night.
SCHOOLS BACK ON MAIN LINE AFTER 47 YEARS - The first Southern Railway Schools 4-4-0 to haul a passenger train on the main line since 1962 was one of the highlights of the hugely successful North Yorkshire Moors Railway autumn steam gala. Repton, which has just become certified for use on the main line, hauled trains over the Esk Valley Line to Whitby and then to Battersby, reports Robin Jones.
MAGIC MOMENTS - Autumn is one of the steam photographers' favourite seasons, as the temperatures fall, the air becomes fresher and locomotives produce the kind of exhaust expected of them. Robert Falconer presents a selection of seasonal steam images.
RON WHITE: KING OF COLOUR! - For a little over 32 years, the name Ron White has been synonymous with Colour-Rail; but as from 1 October 2009, that is no longer the case a€ or is it? The ownership of the trading company and the custody of the archive may no longer belong to Lord Ron of Chesham; but in the minds of many, it will always be remembered as 'his' collection, writes Keith Langston.
