A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR:
In wishing all our readers a very happy New Year, we do so in the firm conviction that 1964 is going to be the best yet for railway modellers. This is not just because there are many exciting new trade products in store ; rather it is because there is a growing trend among enthusiasts towards an intelligent combination of ready-to-run, kits and scratch-built models. After all, it is not the products that matter most; what is important is the use we make of them. Nevertheless, new products are always of vital interest, and our News Special has long been a popular section of the magazine. From this volume onward it will appear as a considerably enlarged, completely separate section, run jointly with our new companion magazine, Model Roads and Racing. As a result, you are not only getting a free copy of a separate newspaper containing up-to-the-minute news of the latest products in the model field with every copy of the Railway Modeller, but you will still get the same number of editorial pages. We can therefore devote the space previously taken up by the old News Special to further articles of direct model railway interest. The most exciting aspect of this new departure is that, instead of being just another feature of the magazine, News Special has become a newspaper in its own right. Because of this it has a later copy date, and our slogan “ First with the latest ” will apply more than ever; for example, this issue contains advance news of a complete 1964 range. It is our intention to make it the paper for everyone, amateur or professional, who has an interest in the model trade. This is not the only development we have planned for 1964. Our extra pages have already enabled us to improve the magazine by providing a wider coverage in each issue. Many have already commented favourably upon this, but, while we are naturally delighted, we are not satisfied that we have reached perfection! We have plans for further developments which, we believe, will enable us to make even better use of our enlarged space. These will be put into operation during the coming twelve months, but we shall have more to say about each item when the time is ripe. If any of your friends are not already reading the Railway Modeller do tell them about all these outstanding developments.
THREE IN ONE!
In recent issues our “ Railway of the Month ” has been a large and ambitious system, but such layouts represent only a minority of those built, and most model railways are perforce smaller affairs. Therefore, next month we are featuring three such lines, one British style, built in Canada, one American style, built in Britain, and one continental style, built in Norway. We could not permutate further, but no doubt from the ideas given many readers will be able to progress along their own lines and produce more interesting variations. These are but the highlights in another large, interest-packed issue, so make sure to reserve your copy now.
