Welcome to the April 1999 Steam World another issue packed full of action from the great days of BR steam. I remember, as a teenager in the 1960s, going to the ABC Regal cinema in Staines to see Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines. I was particularly interested in the superb replicas of early aircraft which were used in the film but it also featured an airfield which seemed to be modelled on Brooklands - the airfield-cum-racetrack which was not far from where I used to trainspot at Weybridge. The only railway sequence in the film was, however, shot in Bedfordshire and included the Highland Railway 'Jones Goo 4-6-0 No. 103. Steam World contributors John Crawley and Paul Leavens both saw and photographed the filming in progress and their pictures have made an unusual feature. John tells me that the Jones Goods was chosen because of its unusual and 'non-British' colour. I wonder what Stroudley would have made of that description of the shade which he apparently referred to as 'improved engine green.' Also in this issue we've some of John Edgington's photographs of steam bankers in action on the Lickey Incline. John saw and photographed 'Big Bertha,' 'Jinties,' a '9F' 2-10-0 and GWR pannier tanks at work on the Lickey and I've included a representative selection. I hope you'll enjoy looking at them as much as I did. Enjoy your 'ride' and please 'join the train' again next month
