Another new year is under way and even though it's now 36 years (can you believe it?) since everyday standard gauge BR steam ended, there's no waning of interest in that marvellous 20 year span from 1948! It's wonderful to tell you that writers and photographers are still producing lots of good quality material from those evocative years and there's another great selection in this very special 200th issue of Steam World. The current editor and publishers asked me if I'd like to act as Guest Editor for this milestone magazine and as a former Assistant Editor (1981-83) and Editor (1990-92) I was only loo delighted to accept. As Managing Editor of modern railways market-leader RAIL these days, I'm more accustomed to Pendolinos and Voyagers than 'Streaks' and 'Jinties' but it's amazing how you slip back into - a favourite subject - in any case, I never stopped being a regular reader! . In this issue, therefore, I'm revealing some colour proofs (of which only six sets I ever existed) of the December 1983 issue of this magazine, which was never | published. There's also a top quality footplate tale from 'Top Shed' at King's Cross, a recollection of steam days at Exeter, a first-hand story of being in a train crash at Doncaster in 1948, a photo-feature saluting the enginemen who made it all possible, a sprinkling of Scottish steam from 1955 and Dick Blenkinsop's favourite all-time railway photograph. Thanks for making me so welcome once again - it really is a delight being back amongst old friends.
